2009 Torrin Akasha (USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles) A blend of 95% Syrah and 5% Grenache, the 2009 Torrin Akasha has fleshed out considerably since I tasted in barrel last year and displays phenomenal aromas and flavors, impeccable balance, and a sexy, seamless texture that puts it up there with the best California has to offer. Loaded with black and blue fruits, licorice, truffle, violets, and assorted savory and meaty nuances on the nose, the wine is full-bodied on the palate with fantastic purity, a full, concentrated middle, and a shockingly long, tannic finish that pumps out loads of minerality and chocolate notes. Pure class and the best wine I have tasted from Scott; it should benefit from a year or three in bottle, and drink well for 15-20. (96+ pts.)

2009 Torrin Vineyard Syrah Akasha Paso Robles
(95% syrah and 5% grenache; this is the first vintage for this bottling that isn't 100% syrah): Glass-staining purple. Powerful aromas of black raspberry and cassis, with complicating notes of smoked meat, candied lavender and minerals. Deeply pitched, velvety and assertively flavored, with a deep dark berry preserve character enlivened by a strong kick of cracked pepper on the back. Turns spicier on the finish, leaving behind floral pastille, spicecake and licorice notes. This potent wine has the energy of pinot noir. (94 pts)
