SOLD OUT The 2007 Maven is a composed of 70% Grenache from James Berry Vineyard and 30% Syrah from our estate vineyard. A percentage of the Syrah for the Akasha blend is fermented in new French 500L Puncheons. These puncheons are then used to age the Grenache. These larger barrels reduce the oxygen exchange with the wine, slow its development and helps retain its youthful presence. The Grenache in 07 was wonderfully aromatic and had an incredible mid palate richness. The first two thirds of the wine was sultry, complex, and feminine. The remaining third was quite the opposite with more aggressive masculine tannin and grip. While it seems a bit counterintuitive we took a big chewy tannic Syrah and added it to the Grenache to soften the finish. Our goal was not to dilute character, but complex it. The Syrah with its prolonged skin contact, stem inclusion, and newer oak allocation didn’t have any less tannin just different tannin. The blend was made in June and returned to barrel to allow these components time to marry. Bottled in April 2009 unfined and unfiltered the Maven manages to showcase a powerful core of Grenache with a sense of balance and grace. Like its sibling for the vintage, the Maven will undoubtedly turn a few heads now but will certainly cellar beautifully. 76 cases produces. $65.
