Shadow Canyon Vineyard
Once again for the 2014 vintage we have chosen to vineyard designate a small bottling from the remarkably beautiful Shadow Canyon Vineyard located just west of us on York Mountain. This is a fantastic expression of both place and vintage. For 2013 the wine boasted one of the most expressive aromatic profiles of the vintage with graceful palate presence that was almost subtle. The beautiful impact of mother nature has resulted in a veritable flip flop for 2014. The aromatic presence of the wine this year is probably the most delicate and subtle of all of our wines while the texture and mouth feel are in the running for the broadest and most substantial of the lineup. This is a gorgeous wine from a stunning site and is certain to impress over the next 7 to 10 years.
Our Vicinage series of wines gives us an opportunity to work with some of our friends and neighbors to showcase some of the more interesting micro climates that grace the west side of Paso Robles. Shadow Canyon sits on York Mountain a few miles west of our estate vineyard and only about 8 miles from the Pacific. The proximity to the coast and an elevation of around 1600 feet keep this area nice and cool as the early afternoon coastal breezes flow into the Templeton Gap. The area also enjoys some of the highest annual rainfall totals in the area making supplemental irrigation a rarity. Syrah loves this environment and the resulting fruit is dark and savory with loads of spice and pepper. To capitalize on this inherent character, for our interpretation of this amazing Syrah, we opted to ferment about 80% of it whole cluster and age the wine in larger 350 litre barrels. The wine manages to capture the aromatic presence of a cooler climate wine while displaying the textural richness we are so fortunate to have in west Paso. This wine truly captures the essence of this stunningly beautiful location.
