2016

40% SYRAH/ 33% MOURVÈDRE/ 27% GRENACHE.

The 2016 vintage gave us the opportunity to create what may turn out to be our best Banshee to date.  Remarkably fortunate timing allowed us to co-ferment Syrah and Mourvedre, Grenache and Mourvedre, and Syrah and Grenache from vineyard within the Willow Creek and Adelaida Districts of West Paso Robles.  Following a nearly 5 week fermentation utilizing native yeasts, the lots were basket pressed and aged for 22 months in 300L French Oak barrels.  The resulting wines are beautifully layered and complex.  While unmistakably West Paso Robles in the texture and weight of the wine, its subtleties and nuanced aromatics and complexed flavor profile no doubt link The Banshee to its Southern Rhone stylistic roots.  We recommend a few hours in a decanter to allow the wine to open up in its youth.  For those with room in the cellar, this wine will age beautifully over the next decade.

Virtually every evening just past dusk the coyotes come out of the woods down through the vine rows near the house screaming like banshees. These mysterious cries lure curious critters to an uncertain end. The "Banshee" beckons those with a more curious nature.

2015
40% SYRAH/ 35% GRENACHE/ 25% MOURVÈDRE. -Sold out-

Of all the wines in our lineup, the Banshee may be the most vivid representative of the Rhone Varietal movement that has catapulted the credibility of the Paso Robles AVA. At 40% Syrah, 35% Grenache, and 25% Mourvedre, the Banshee weaves together a magnificent tapestry of rich dark fruit, floral highlights and layers of dried herbs and earth capturing the true essence of Rhone. For 2015, the timing of harvest allowed us to co-ferment a portion of the Syrah with the Mourvedre adding to the intrigue of the wine. Following a cold maceration, native yeast initiate the fermentation and punch downs are utilized to manage the cap for upwards of 4 additional weeks. The must is then basket pressed and the wine is aged in a mix of 300 liter and 400 liter barrels for 22 months. Bottled unfined and unfiltered, the wine is then cellared for an additional 8 months prior to our spring release. The Banshee is a substantial wine and will impress now, but will continue to unveil layers of complexity over the next decade.

2014
50% SYRAH/ 26% MOURVÈDRE/ 24% GRENACHE.     -SOLD OUT-

"It offers lots of peppery herbs and earthy dark fruits, full-bodied richness, lots of meatiness, ripe, polished tannin and a great finish. It's a big, balanced, straight up terrific red that's going to drink nicely for over a decade." -Jeb Dunnuck: 95 points.

The 2014 Banshee is probably the most brash and unapologetic version of this wine since our inaugural bottling of the 2006 vintage.  The Syrah Mourvedre dominate the wine with loads of charcuterie, smoke and salinity that somehow manage to meld flawlessly with an intense layer of blueberry cobbler that unfolds in the glass. The color is as saturated as the palate is intense.  For those of you familiar with Torrin wines, the tactile presence of the wine on the palate is considered one of its most important attributes. Here the Banshee certainly delivers with remarkable richness and a silky texture front to back.

2013

48% SYRAH/ 32% GRENACHE/ 20% MOURVÈDRE.   -SOLD OUT-

The 2013 Banshee is a fantastic example of a wine that manages to successfully walk the line between power and grace. The texture and length of this wine are incredible and how the savory and earthy backbone complexes the rich dark blue and black fruits is a thing of beauty. While the majority of the fruit in this wine comes from our estate vineyard, for 2013 we opted to include a bit of Syrah from Shadow Canyon Vineyard on York Mountain just west of us. While only about a 15 minute bike ride from here, York Mountain is its own AVA and is not included in the Paso Robles AVA. As a result, the AVA designation on our blend must be classified as Central Coast. Aged in a combination of larger 500 liter puncheons and traditional 228 liter barrels, the wine certainly lets the purity of the fruit take the lead with the oak simply adding depth and texture.
