Banshee 2006

Virtually every evening just past dusk the coyotes come out of the woods down through the vine rows near the house screaming like banshees. These mysterious cries lure curious critters to an uncertain end. The 2006 "Banshee" beckons those with a more curious nature. Bottled unfined and unfiltered February 2008, the grace of the Grenache, the precision of the Syrah and the rustic nature of the Alicante have come together to form a remarkable wine.         72 cases produced.

At the tail end of our north-facing block of Syrah the aspect shifts to the northeast. Here resides a small 0.4-acre block of Alicante Bouschet. Lured by our own curiosity we kept one half ton for ourselves. As it turns out it had great color as expected but it also had chewy tannin and black fruits with dark chocolate and coffee notes. The Grenache and Syrah portions of the wine are once used French barrels selected from the wines previously described. The Alicante was destemmed to a small open top fermentor and cold macerated for 3 days. During the 12-day fermentation, the skins were gently punched down 3 to 4 times daily. After a gentle basket pressing the wine was transferred to a once used French oak barrel. This 3-barrel blend was conceptually made just after pressing. I decided to allow the wines time to complete ML in barrel and evolve on their own for fear the Alicante may not carry its weight. The fear was thankfully proven unjustified and the entire barrel was used in the blend.  72 cases produced. $60
